Compassionate ABA Therapy: How Spectrum Pride Is Different

Choosing an ABA provider is a big decision. If you’ve searched for ABA online, you’ve probably seen strong opinions, including some negative ones. It’s natural to wonder whether ABA is right for your child, and how to tell a great provider from the rest.

At Spectrum Pride, we believe in compassionate ABA therapy: care that is grounded in science, built on respect for your child, and guided by clear clinical standards. We measure those standards every month, for every child, and in key areas we go beyond what’s typical in ABA.

Here’s what that looks like for your child and your family.

Why Some Parents Have Concerns About ABA Therapy

It’s important to name the concerns honestly. Criticism of ABA often comes from:

  • Older approaches that were rigid, harsh, or focused on making autistic children appear “normal”
  • Personal stories from autistic adults who felt their needs, feelings, and identities were ignored
  • Discouraging harmless behaviors like stimming, or requiring forced eye contact
  • Too much focus on compliance instead of communication, choice, and well-being
  • Inconsistent quality across providers, including thin supervision, high staff turnover, and therapists who weren’t well trained or supported

These experiences are real, and they matter. We believe the best response isn’t to dismiss them. It’s to listen, learn, and hold ourselves to clear, measurable standards.

What Compassionate ABA Therapy Looks Like for Your Child

Applied Behavior Analysis is grounded in decades of research on how people learn. The science is a tool. What matters is how it’s used. At Spectrum Pride, compassionate ABA therapy means:

  • Your child’s comfort comes first. Sessions are engaging, play-based, and built around your child’s interests.
  • We value who your child is. Our goal is never to make your child appear “less autistic.” Harmless behaviors like stimming are respected.
  • Communication over compliance. We help your child express wants, needs, and feelings, whether through words, signs, pictures, or a device.
  • Positive, data-driven care. We use positive reinforcement and adjust the plan based on what’s actually working for your child.

More Expert Time With Your Child: ABA Supervision That Goes Further

Supervision is one of the clearest signs of quality in ABA. It’s how experienced clinicians guide your child’s program and coach the team working with your child.

  • More supervision. Your child receives supervision equal to at least 20% of their therapy hours, the top of the range the Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP) describes as the standard of care.
  • Supervision that happens with your child. Most supervision takes place during your child’s sessions, and most of that is in person, so supervisors see your child’s progress firsthand and coach the team in real time.
  • A BCBA on your child’s case every month. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst spends time on your child’s care every single month.
  • A local supervisor. Every child has a supervisor in their region who can be there in person.

A Team That’s Ready for Your Child

  • We only start when we’re ready. We accept new clients only when a supervision team has room to serve them well, so your child never joins an overloaded caseload.
  • No waitlist runaround. We don’t keep a waitlist. If we don’t have capacity, we’ll tell you honestly and encourage you to check with other providers so your child can start care sooner.
  • A quick, thorough start. Your child’s assessment begins within 2 weeks of authorization and is completed within 2 weeks of starting, including observations in at least two different settings.

An ABA Treatment Plan Built Around Your Child and Family

Every family is different, and so is every child. Maybe you want your child to tell you when they’re hungry or hurting. Maybe you’re hoping for calmer mornings, safer outings, or a smoother bedtime. Your goals shape the plan.

  • You help choose your child’s goals and shape the treatment plan, with respect for your family’s culture, language, and values.
  • Every treatment plan is reviewed by a senior clinical leader before it is submitted.
  • Progress on every goal is updated monthly, and your child’s overall development is measured with the Vineland-3 at the start of services and every year after.
  • Each month, clinical leadership reviews client progress in every region, and children who need a change in approach leave that review with a documented action plan.
  • Updated treatment plans are prepared weeks before each authorization ends, helping avoid gaps in your child’s services.

You’re Part of the Team: Parent Training and Open Communication

  • Parent training every month. Parent training is provided for your child every month, in person or by telehealth, so you can support your child’s progress at home.
  • Your concerns are heard. You can raise a concern at any time without affecting your child’s services, and we acknowledge every concern within 2 business days.

Behavior Technicians Who Are Trained, Supported, and Consistent

Great care for children starts with great care for the people who provide it. When therapists feel supported and well trained, they bring their best to every session.

  • Every technician completes our hands-on training in live sessions and is evaluated before working with your child on their own.
  • Technicians receive formal evaluations and ongoing coaching, so quality stays high over time.
  • Your child works with at least two technicians, helping new skills carry over across people and settings.
  • A supervisor attends each new technician’s first session with your child, and every new relationship starts with time focused on building trust and rapport.
  • Every session follows a clear, written structure in your child’s Program Book, so sessions stay consistent from one technician to the next.

Safety, Dignity, and Trust

  • We always start with the least restrictive, positive, reinforcement-based approach.
  • Only staff certified in crisis management may use physical intervention, and only when it is part of your child’s documented plan.
  • If an incident ever occurs, it is documented, shared with you, and signed by you.
  • Your child’s information is protected under HIPAA, and our BCBAs and Registered Behavior Technicians follow the BACB Ethics Codes.

Questions to Ask Any ABA Therapy Provider

We don’t ask you to take our word for it. Whichever provider you choose, these questions can help you compare:

  • How much supervision will my child receive, and how much of it happens during sessions?
  • How soon will the assessment start after authorization?
  • How will my child’s goals be chosen, and how often is progress updated?
  • How often will I receive parent training?
  • How are technicians trained, evaluated, and supported?
  • How do you handle stimming and other harmless behaviors?
